Scopewise guide

Home interior design cost in India: the honest 2026 breakdown

Interior quotes are hard to compare because every brand prices differently. This guide gives you per-square-foot rates by material and finish, city-wise variations, and the line items that quietly inflate the final bill — so you can read any quote like an auditor.

The big picture

What a full home interior costs per sq.ft

Essential

₹1,200 – ₹1,600 / sq.ft

Commercial plywood, laminate finishes, standard hardware. Functional and durable for rentals and first homes.

Premium

₹1,600 – ₹2,200 / sq.ft

BWP plywood, acrylic or membrane finishes, soft-close hardware, branded fittings. The most common band for 2–3 BHK homes.

Luxury

₹2,200 – ₹3,500+ / sq.ft

BWP/HDF cores, PU or veneer finishes, imported hardware, designer lighting and custom metalwork.

Rates are quoted on the scope area (wardrobe shutter area, kitchen cabinet area, etc.), not your carpet area — which is exactly why two quotes for the same home can look wildly different.

Line by line

Per-sq.ft rates by material and finish

ItemTypical rangeWhat to check
Wardrobe / storage — laminate finish₹1,400 – ₹1,900 / sq.ftShutter area rate. Laminate on BWP ply is the value benchmark; anything below ₹1,300 usually means commercial ply or thinner boards.
Wardrobe / storage — acrylic finish₹1,800 – ₹2,500 / sq.ftHigh-gloss acrylic adds ₹350–600/sq.ft over laminate. Check whether the quote uses 1mm acrylic sheet or cheaper 'acrylic-look' laminates.
Wardrobe / storage — membrane / PU / veneer₹1,600 – ₹3,000 / sq.ftMembrane sits between laminate and acrylic; PU and natural veneer are premium and need skilled polishing — labour quality varies widely.
BWP plywood (material grade reference)₹80 – ₹150 / sq.ftIS:710 boiling-water-proof ply is the right core for kitchens and wardrobes. Quotes rarely name the IS grade — ask for it in writing.
Modular kitchen — cabinets₹1,800 – ₹3,500 / sq.ftA 60–80 sq.ft cabinet kitchen typically lands at ₹1.6L – ₹3.5L excluding countertop, appliances and chimney.
Countertop — granite / quartz₹250 – ₹700 / sq.ftGranite runs ₹250–400/sq.ft installed; engineered quartz ₹450–700/sq.ft. Check if the quote prices countertop separately or bundles it.
False ceiling (gypsum / POP)₹85 – ₹160 / sq.ftRate depends on design complexity and whether cove lighting cut-outs are included. Periphery-only ceilings cost far less than full coverage.
Painting (emulsion, walls)₹14 – ₹40 / sq.ftBasic tractor emulsion at the low end; premium washable emulsions with putty and primer at the high end. Quoted on wall area, not carpet area.
Hardware & fittings allowance8% – 14% of woodwork valueHinges, channels, handles and baskets. Branded soft-close hardware (Hettich/Hafele class) costs roughly double generic — quotes should name the brand.

City-wise

How prices vary across Indian cities

The same scope of work prices differently by city, mainly due to labour, logistics and site overheads. The bands below are relative to a South-India baseline for a standard 2–3 BHK package.

CityVs baselineWhy
HyderabadBaselineCompetitive labour market; often the reference pricing for South India packages.
Bengaluru+5% – 10%Higher labour and site-logistics costs push packages up modestly over Hyderabad.
ChennaiBaseline – 5%Material availability is strong; labour slightly cheaper than Bengaluru.
Pune+5% – 12%Close to Mumbai supply chains; mid-market packages comparable to Bengaluru.
Mumbai+15% – 25%Highest labour, transport and society-permission overheads; compact homes raise per-sq.ft rates.
Delhi NCR+5% – 15%Wide spread — Gurugram/Noida premium projects price like Mumbai; other zones closer to baseline.

Read the fine print

Six places quotes quietly inflate

  • Loft covering, pelmets and crockery units priced as separate 'add-ons' after the headline number
  • Countertop, hob, chimney and sink excluded from the 'modular kitchen' line
  • Design fees, site-handling and transport charges appearing only in the final invoice
  • 'Up to X sq.ft' package caps — every extra square foot billed at a higher marginal rate
  • Electrical points, false ceiling and painting excluded from 'full home' packages
  • Vague material specs ('premium laminate') with no brand, thickness or IS grade named

The method

How to compare two quotes fairly

  1. 1

Normalise the scope: list every room and unit both quotes cover, and flag anything only one includes.

  2. 2

Normalise the materials: match ply grade, finish type, hardware brand and countertop material line by line.

  3. 3

Separate one-time costs (design fee, site handling) from the woodwork and civil work totals.

  4. 4

Compare like-for-like totals — then compare the excluded items list, which is where the real difference hides.

Or skip the spreadsheet: Scopewise does this normalisation automatically from the two PDFs a vendor sends you, and returns a line-by-line audited report.
